Hello! We are excited to share this new website that exposes current conservation efforts and biodiversity patterns on the beautiful Island of Palau. We are a team of UCLA geography students who have created this website with help from our professor Dr. Thomas Gillespie. One of the main purposes of our research is to inform educational systems, tourism agencies, and NGO’s about local biodiversity patterns and various conservation methods. We want to create awareness and broaden sustainability efforts. Therefore, this site provides a list of Palau’s most notable biodiversity hotspots, coral species that are found in surrounding reefs, and an extensive list of species located on the island.
Educational systems and teachers can benefit from our website by promoting this information to all of their students. This website is accessible to the public and lays out the significance of conservation methods in Palau. Students and teachers can identify various endemic and endangered species, and are exposed to the environmental problems on the island. We want educational systems to use this site and understand the processes happening around them—people need to become more aware of local environmental situations. Students and teachers may even want to create their own sustainability projects based off of our research to help conserve Palau as well!
Tourism agencies can also benefit from this website. When constructing tours, it is important to locate which species are unique to the island, which are endangered, and the current sustainability methods. Foreigners want to know what makes Palau distinct and what the environmental processes are. Even more so, people visiting may even want to find ways to help these species or even see these biodiversity hotspots for themselves. Our website provides an easy way for tourists to educate themselves about the environment in Palau. Promoting this site through tourism agencies is an easy way to create more awareness around the world.
Non-government organizations interested in conservation methods can also benefit from our website. If they are looking for more localized forms of sustainability, the species lists and popular biodiversity locations we have provided will give them the information they need. Our site is an excellent reference and enables people to easily see which species there are, how they are impacted b the environment, and ways to create more sustainability. Conservation NGO’s looking for more ways to sustain the environment can use our site to find specific ways to protect Palau.
Education and School Systems in Palau
School systems in Palau are very small but still have a chance to make a huge change. Because students come from all over the island, teachers can share this website and educate classrooms on Palau’s environmental issues. There are after school programs for young kids and various groups for older students that will benefit from using this website.
