WHAT'S BEING DONE?
Non-Government Organization Network of the Global Environment Facility
This NGO, also known as the GEF- CSO Network is made up of GEF certified organizations that work to provide methods of sustainability and outreach in places of need. They are overseen by a Coordination Committee and focus on various geographic regions around the world. GEF- CSO focuses on biodiversity, climate change, land degradation, organic pollutants, and many other environmental issues. We are currently working with them to become a GEF – CSO member in order to help improve the environmental issues in Palau. We are excited about this partnership because we are able to provide extensive research and important findings on the environmental issues in Palau, while GEF-CSO can provide better funding for our sustainability methods, enable us to participate in consultation meetings, and ultimately create more awareness on a global scale.
Other organizations in Palau are also working towards creating more awareness, environmental protection policies, and making a more sustainable environment. PIANGO focuses on various Pacific Islands and has set up a strategic plan in order to make a change. Their program objectives are aimed to build more evidence about these issues, strengthen policies, and establish leaders. In addition, the Palau Conservation Society is a smaller organization that solely focuses on Palau. They already have community outreach programs, legistation policies, and national partnerships. Focusing on coral reef ecosystems, mangroves, seagrass, and forested ecosystems, PCS works on a community level of engagement.

WHAT'S BEING DONE?
- Palau's Conservation Society has worked since 2011 to establish a stronger enforcement of protected areas. There are currently over 40 protected areas covering 40% of nearshore marine areas as well as, 20% of terrestrial areas.
- The Palau Protected Area Network works on enforcing protection of ecological biodiversity
- Palau International Coral Reef Center monitors, studies, assesses, and works on recovering the coral reefs
- The Palau Ministry of Resources and Development in behind the the creation of Palau's major protected areas
- The San Diego Zoo Institution for Conservation researches and then implements help with the conservation of Palau. The Zoo provides workshops that expand nurseries for native Palauan plants. These plants are then used for restoration, as well as a means to prevent further deforestation by providing the local population with necessary plants used for medical purposes, so that individuals do not attempt to harvest the wild plant populations.
